The electric vehicle rEVolution is well underway, transforming the way we think about transport and energy consumption.

However, as more drivers make the switch to EVs, the limitations of our current public charging infrastructure become increasingly clear.

To shed light on these challenges, Versinetic conducted an in-depth survey of 803 EV drivers across the United Kingdom for its whitepaper, “Charging on the Go: Public EV Charging and Payment Systems.

This whitepaper, authored by Dunstan Power, Managing Director, and Julian Skidmore, EV Industry Analyst at Versinetic for World EV Day, delves into the real-world experiences of these drivers, uncovering the hurdles they face and the solutions they propose.

Imagine you’re an EV driver, setting out on a long journey. Your car’s battery is running low, and you pull into a service station, only to find all the charging points occupied or, worse, out of order.

This scenario is all too familiar for many EV owners.

Our survey reveals that availability is the most pressing concern, with nearly 36% of respondents struggling to find available chargers when they need them.

The frequent sight of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles blocking charging spots – a problem reported by 14% of drivers frequently and 44% occasionally – compounds this frustration.

Other Key Findings from EV drivers surveyed in the Charging on the Go report include:

  • Reliability: Reliability issues are prevalent, with just over 14% frequently encountering non-functional chargers and nearly 46% experiencing this occasionally. This highlights the necessity for better maintenance and reliable infrastructure.

  • Payment Complexity: Despite the availability of multiple payment options, users still face several issues. The complexity of using different apps for various charging networks remains a significant frustration for 15% of EV drivers, while nearly 35% find it somewhat frustrating but manageable. These findings underscore the need for a more unified and streamlined payment system that can simplify the process for users.

  • Cost: High costs associated with using public chargers are a concern for 16% of respondents, indicating a need for more affordable charging options.

One of the main recommendations from drivers polled for the Charging on the Go report is the need for better maintenance.

Regular upkeep and prompt repairs are essential to maintain the trust and satisfaction of EV drivers, as highlighted by 44% in the survey.
